Alex Liggett from Staffordshire spent eight-years working from his spare bedroom before setting up the Vinyl Guys.

The idea for the company came from his passion for race cars and he started making stickers for his own cars in 2013.

Since then, Liggett has grown his one-man business by selling on eBay and directly to customers. As a result of the growth, Liggett left his 18-year career in the police and moved his business to its own premises in September 2020.

Describing the impact being able to work for himself has had on his personal life, Liggett says: “My daughter is 11 and working for myself means more family time. We lost my dad in January 2017 then my father-in-law six weeks later and it made me realise that life is too short.

“The Vinyl Guys has been the best decision – business has boomed, which has given me so much confidence in what we are building.”

Whilst the pandemic posed an uncertain time for all businesses, for The Vinyl Guys, demand from trades people who were busy and needed to outsource meant the last year was a strong period of growth for the company.

During this period of growth, Liggett took on a full-time member of staff with over 20 years’ experience in the printing industry. Chris Butler joined as production manager and has also been running mentoring workshops and inviting people to learn about the industry.

Liggett explains: “The training days have been really popular, and we’ve had people travel from all over the UK and Europe to take part. Nobody else in the industry is doing this, but I think it’s really important to give people the opportunity to learn how to run a business – it can only strengthen the sector and make it better.”

Through support from Virgin Money, The Vinyl Guys has invested in two printers through printing supplier, Roland DG, whilst being able to keep cash in the business.
