Unilever launches wrapper-less ice cream

As part of its ‘#GetPlasticWise’ campaign, Unilever has launched new plastic-free packaging for its Solero Organic Peach ice lollies.

The new wrapper-less packaging is being trialled with Ocado

The packaging features built-in compartments for the ice creams to sit in and is made from recycled cardboard with a specially designed polyethylene (PE) coating.

The new design features 35% less plastic than the original individually wrapped packaging and can now be widely recycled across the UK.

Unilever is a founding member of the UK Plastics Pact which strives for an economy where plastics do not become waste.

The UK Plastics Pact is in line with the company’s own #GetPlasticWise campaign which aims to make all its plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

“We’re really impressed with the level of innovation and creativity that Unilever has show in developing this new pack,” says Helen Bird, strategic engagement manager at WRAP, which manages the UK Plastic Pact.

If successful and the feedback from customers is positive, this innovative pack could reduce the amount of plastic we use in the future to package our ice creams

“It will be welcomed by shoppers who we know want to be able to recycle the packaging they bring home from supermarkets. We look forwards to seeing the results of the trial.”

The new packaging is being piloted exclusively with Ocado with a limited number of products to gather consumer response.

“As we head towards summer, we’ve listened to our customers and are working hard to rethink plastic packaging for our ice cream ranges,” says Noel Clarke, vice president of refreshment at Unilever.

“We’re delighted to be trialling this wrapper-less Solero multipack with Ocado in the UK. If successful and the feedback from customers is positive, this innovative pack could reduce the amount of plastic we use in the future to package our ice creams.”
