Hearst pledges to ditch the plastic

Hearst is the latest magazine publisher to pledge to replace plastic wraps for all its subscriber copies by 2020.

Hearst pledges to ditch plastic wrap on its subscriber editions by 2020

Publishing a number of magazines including Esquire, ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping, Hearst sells over four million magazines a month in the UK. The publisher has decided to switch to sustainably sourced paper wraps for all its subscriber editions by January 2020.

James Wildman, chief executive officer of Hearst UK, says: “Here at Hearst UK, we take our environmental and social responsibilities very seriously. We are committed to making positive changes that help create a more sustainable future for our employees, commercial partners and customers alike.

“I am proud of our pledge to replace plastic magazine bags with sustainably sourced paper wraps on Hearst UK’s subscriber copies by January 2020. This is an important step as we continue to prioritise our position as one of the most sustainable media companies in the UK.”

Hearst was awarded ISO 14001 certification this year and the switch is part of the company’s pledge to the standard, which helps companies to improve their environmental performance through the efficient use of resources and reduction of waste.

The publisher says it is reviewing all of its environmental business practices, including staff education and travel, having already moved to a new head office in Leicester Square that uses 100% renewable energy, contributes zero waste to landfill and employs a three-stream waste separation system.

Hearst joins a number of publishers and publications that are making the switch from using polythene to wrap the print magazines. The Guardian announced it would be switching to biodegradable packaging that uses potato starch, whilst Immediate Media also announced it would be providing paper wrapping for BBC Countryfile and BBC Wildlife subscriber magazines.
