Finishing

Solopress cites importance of finishing investment

Online print business Solopress has opened up about the impact new Hunkeler finishing technology has had on the business, with the machines forming part of a major investment project at the company.

Solopress has committed around £3.3m to the new investment drive

Solopress took on two Hunkeler roll-to-roll machines and two Hunkeler roll-to-CS8s with 30-inch stackers, with the kit running alongside a HP PageWide Web Press T250 HD, the first press of its kind operating in a commercial environment.

Simon Cooper, managing director of Southend-based Solopress, says that while much of the focus of the £3.3m investment drive was focused around the new HP machine, the impact of the Hunkeler has been significant.

He explains that the investment in the HP press and complementary Hunkeler kit – supplied in the UK by finishing specialist Friedheim International – has allowed Solopress to co-locate finishing with the printing.

We are eager to branch out from our existing offering of general commercial print to also encompass the publishing sector

“Our previous workflow required us to transport printed products to a different production unit for finishing,” Cooper says, adding” “Additionally, the speed of finishing will enable us to get more work produced in a shorter period of time with less labour overhead.

“This in turn improves productivity and effectively extends our production window, ultimately leading to better prices and turnaround times for our customers, which will then lead to growth for our business.

“We are eager to branch out from our existing offering of general commercial print to also encompass the publishing sector. This would be a new market for us, but this new equipment lends itself to serving that market well and our expertise in fast turnaround and slick workflow will be an advantage.”

Solopress will soon follow up on the installation of the HP machine by adding a second T250 machine, with this now on order and installation planned for early next year, as Solopress seeks to further build on its manufacturing capabilities.
