Metsä Board opens new ‘Excellence Centre’

Metsä Board has established a new Paperboard and Packaging Excellence Centre in Finland as it seeks to boost the development of solutions of the future.

Located in Äänekoski, the facility will focus on Metsä paperboard and packaging products, featuring offices, a laboratory, R&D facilities, a packaging design studio and a customer feedback centre.

The facility will be located on the same site as Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill and board mill, the Pro Nemus visitor centre and a demo plant for Metsä Spring and Japanese Itochu Corporation.

Construction planning is due to begin imminently, with Metsä aiming to open the site next year.

Sari Pajari, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Metsä Board, says: “The new Excellence Centre will enable a wide variety of collaboration, especially in the area of holistic packaging design, throughout the value chain.

“We will be able to organise packaging design workshops and innovation days together with our customers and partners in order to demonstrate the full potential of our lightweight, fresh fibre paperboards.”
