McDonalds gives more plastic the boot

Last month the UK government declared a climate change emergency following a series of protests by environment activist group, Extinction Rebellion. This month, media reports have revealed that the British public is now more worried about climate crisis than issues such as immigration and crime.

With a growing awareness of the negative impact we are having on the environment creating a wave of consumer demand for sustainability, more businesses and brands are addressing ways to be more planet friendly.

Global fast food chain McDonald’s has announced that it will be switching the single-use plastic on its McFlurry packaging and its salad bowls with recycled cardboard, saving a total of 485 metric tonnes of plastic a year.

The new salad box containers are believed to be made from 50% recycled cartonboard and 50% new materials from sustainable sources.

The move follows the replacement of the chain’s 639 million plastic straws used in the UK each year with paper alternatives.

Both initiatives are part of McDonald’s commitment to sourcing all of its packaging from renewable or recycled sources by 2025.

Speaking to Metro, supply chain director of McDonald’s UK and Ireland, Beth Hart, describes the latest initiative as the latest step in the firm’s sustainability journey.

Hart continues: “I am delighted that today’s news means we will be serving our much loved and new menu items in an even more sustainable way. We are committed to listening to our customers and finding solutions with our suppliers that work for them, this is the latest example of that – but by no means the end.”
